My friend Kate is in her 70s. Jonas Salk came too late for her. She was diagnosed with polio in 1953. Her family was rural, and poor. Her parents waited to take her to the doctor because of the cost.
They were consumed by guilty. Did their inaction cost their daughter her limbs? They blamed themselves. So they beat her.
