Against Forgetting

Rule of Law, Rule of Man, Rule of Sandwich

The development of the Chen Tongjia case to this point is simply a big ugly joke! Those claims to maintain justice, seek justice for the victim’s family, and the original intention, were just lies, just a disguise, now the “secret purpose” has been reached, and all the consequences are none of their business. All the parties who were involved, and acted so righteous before, can’t hide fast enough and keep a distance from the incidence as far away as possible. “Madam, what is your last name? Have I met you?”; “We can’t help anymore, we can only call on the relevant authorities to follow up.”; “Please let it go.”

After two eventful years, it's not surprising that everyone has long forgotten how things started. Only when the victim’s family seeing that things being slowed to a halt, asked a very simple question. Where is justice? This awakened everyone, especially those who were once involved, and claimed it was so important. Their responses were just ugly. Everyone evasively used one lie to cover another lie. The technique was clumsy and openly insulted the wisdom of the public. All of them deny that they have anything to do this the whole thing. The government has nothing else can do… and the most absurd thing is that since Chen Tongjia was released from prison last year, he has been living in a safe house arranged by the government!

Then there was a recording of Chen Tongjia to explain to the public right the way, but there was nothing new and no real action. And nowadays, as the government said, Chen is a “free man.” Why would he use audio recordings to explain? It should be a face-to-face response, killing someone else’s daughter, but apologizing through the recording, how sincere is that? Therefore, I have reason to believe that Chen is currently being monitored 24 hours a day and is definitely not a “free man.” Therefore, he will not be scheduled to appear in public to avoid being seen through. As soon as he was released from prison, he was picked up by the pastor, not the government staff, because this made things seem less obtrusive and suspicious. The epidemic threat around the world, make traveling strictly controlled, so he had to “wait for the right time” to turn himself in.

I personally think that even if Chen has already served his sentence in Hong Kong, and he is considered a “free man”, but that’s the exact reason that the HK government afraid it is really possible for him to surrender himself. Imagine how that would make the HK government look, and not to mention the embarrassment towards the central government. Therefore, the Hong Kong government must put Chen under the monitor, and the role of the pastor is to cover up the role of the government. Even Chen said in the recording that he will surrender to Taiwan within this month. In fact, it is no longer his decision, it depends on how the Hong Kong government handles it.

The biggest consideration of the Hong Kong government is not to recognize that Taiwan has an independent judiciary. Therefore, some people previously suggested that Hong Kong should send prisoners to Taiwan and hand them off at the airport. The Chief Executive said no. Taiwan said that it could send people to Hong Kong to receive suspects at the airport, but the chief executive refused. It is said that Taiwan did not cooperate, but in fact, the whole incident was that a Hong Kong citizen killed another Hong Kong citizen. It only happened in Taiwan and the suspect fled back to Hong Kong afterward. The Taiwan side has opened a case, launched an investigation, collected evidence, and notified the Hong Kong side, and proposed a plan for the transfer of prisoners. They really have nothing else to do. Moreover, the suspects and victims are not Taiwanese, the public is not pressing, and not putting pressure on the government to deal with them as soon as possible. On the contrary, the Hong Kong side’s handling methods have been nothing but disaster. On the one hand, they have to uphold justice, but they don’t want to bend the rule just a little to accomplish that. The attitude is always arrogant. It’s no negotiation when you keep telling the other side “it’s my way or the highway.”

However, this is nothing unusual for the people in Hong Kong, the government has been having such an attitude in the past years. When things go wrong, it’s always somebody’s fault and has nothing to do with me. We can only wait and see this saga turn out, the thing is, the Hong Kong people will foot the bill for everything, and they can completely stay out of the matter. Righteousness? Justice? Never crossed their mind!
