3 Reasons Why You Need To Learn When (And What) To Give Up

We have been conditioned with years of exposure to content that go something like this — “Never give up”.

In fact, we may not even realize the weight of such conditioning until we actually get to a point where we have no choice but to question the meaning it holds for us;

Unfortunately though, even with questioning that sentiment — more often than not, we are capable of convincing ourselves of the truth in it;

Even if that means we must lie to ourselves.

What if we were able to understand ‘giving up’ in a new light?

And what if that meaning helped us achieve everything we’ve ever truly needed?

Sometimes, giving up can be the best we can do for ourselves, and to do that, we must know when to tap into those moments.

Here are 3 reasons we need to identify for ourselves:

1. Giving Up On A Path That Leads To A Goal

Sometimes, we may try hard to get somewhere, and if it doesn’t work the way we want it to — we try harder.

What we might conveniently ignore, are the subtle reasons why that particular path is not leading up to our destination.

It all comes down to being accepting of a change that is upon us to action;

Maybe we need to stop trying in that direction;

Maybe we’ve exhausted the potential of that path relative to the potential we carry within us.

It is at this point that we may question the track we’re on, and it is also at this point that we convince ourselves of staying put — simply because we’ve invested so much already.

The Sunk Cost Fallacy sets in too deep for us to be convinced in staying rooted.

But what good is it doing us if we’re not making headway?

It doesn’t mean you stop trying altogether, but it is key to realize what to stop trying — to only be able to begin trying what might work.

The answer to this question is in the lie that we need to break from — the lie we readily tell ourselves — it’ll eventually work out.

The truth is, it’s not worked out yet for a reason — and the sooner we accept that, the sooner we’ll be prepared to change course.

2. Giving Up On The Outcome Of A Goal

More often than not, our primary purpose of working towards a goal is with the intention of achieving some very specific results — results that we have pre-defined in our head.

While it is necessary to have an outcome in mind, it is equally important to not cling to the ‘how’ or ‘when’ of the outcome.

At the end of the day, there’s a bunch of variables completely out of our control — that can severely impact the outcome in ways we do not expect.

Giving up on the outcome of a goal we’re pursuing, might help us re-assess our intentions, our values, and most importantly, what is it worth to us;

Because when something truly matters to us, we will not be afraid to explore what that route offers — even if it is not what we initially set out for.

Allowing ourselves to keep a safe distance from the outcome of a goal, can empower us to broaden our horizons in ways we never considered.

3. Giving Up On A Goal Altogether

A reminder that each one of us needs to hear –

Giving up on your goal doesn’t make you a loser or an incompetent person.

This is not to say that we should be okay with being complacent, and not trying to better ourselves.

It is about being aware enough to know when a goal is simply not something we deeply need, or want.

In a world where we are constantly exposed to explicit displays of accomplishments made by people we cross paths with — it is easy to get illusioned into thinking we want the same things that are on others’ checklists;

While it might be true in some cases, it is equally important to be open to understanding how our goals might be different than those we look up to, or are exposed to.

Sometimes, being a better version of ourselves, requires us to break away from our old bucket lists.

We are too hard upon ourselves, trying to stick to versions of our desires that outgrow us.

The moment we allow ourselves to realign with what we need now, and break from what we thought we needed earlier — that is when we begin our journey towards a real change.

The more we condition ourselves to be okay with giving up, the more we open our avenues to explore what the world has to offer us.

To get closer to everything that is meant for us, we must be willing to release ourselves from what’s not ours.

More often than not, it is easy for us to convince on sticking it out, than to give up!

And that is because of our minds are programmed to think and function that way — but that doesn’t mean we don’t carry the power to change that programming.

If we are open enough to pay attention to the reasons we need to give up — we might end up doing the best thing for ourselves.
