“Doctor — “

He carefully closes the incision on the patient he’s been working on for the last four hours. The surgery went well, and the patient’s family wants an update.

“Let them know it went well. The patient is on the way to recovery, and they’ll receive another update once the patient is awake. We’ll be in touch.”

The doctor thanks the medical staff, exits the room, and prepares for the next patient.

This doctor also has a network of help — and technology — to keep families informed about patient progress.

This doctor would never be asked to perform a full day of surgeries and appointments, only to be asked to create times for families of patients to meet with them to discuss treatment plans in the evening.

This doctor would never be asked to create more times for patients and their families to meet with them after hours if there weren’t enough times available.

This doctor might be on call — but would be paid for it, and whatever services were provided…
