Australia is on Fire

In August 2019, the world witnessed the Amazon rainforest burning. A month later, the bushfire season started in Australia. And the country has been on fire ever since.

As of writing this, 140 bushfires are burning New South Wales and Queensland, including big fires dubbed as “mega-fire”, which size is as big as the greater Sydney area. Some “mega-fires” will be likely burning the country for weeks until we have rain in late January. The fires have destroyed more than 1,000 homes.

More terrifyingly, fire explosions are happening outside of Sydney due to crowning; when the fire moves between treetops above the ground.

According to Dr Bidda Jones, the Chief Scientist at the Australia Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the blazes have a significant impact on wildlife. We’re losing food sources and nesting places for animals. The Port Macquarie Koala Hospital estimated more than 350 koalas have died. For those who survived, they have no home.
