Moving away from home is an experience that doesn’t always fit into words. There are so many strange feelings that only you have. Those you left behind will feel it, but differently. They will mourn you. You, on the other hand, will mourn them, yourself, your old home, and sometimes your lack of connection with your new home, too.

Then, you visit home again, and it’s not the same. Everyone has moved on. Life has happened. Since you aren’t spending ongoing time with those people, your awareness isn’t really updating along with them.

Let’s be real:

Facetime calls can help, but if you’re anything like me, it can be hard to keep up. Busy lives and time zone differences cause a natural rift — as if there wasn’t enough distance already, right?

You realize “home” always lived in your memories of a place, and its people. Once those memories stopped, it became like reminiscing on the dead — and then visiting them in the afterlife to see what they’ve been up to.
