How To Improve Your Listening Comprehension In English?

For Basic Level:
- First, you require 250–300 hours (15 weeks).
- Get materials you can understand %90 of.
- Slow it down, and imitate the speaker.

- Listen and read at the same time:
1- First with your language subtitles.
2- Then listen with English subtitles.
3- Also read a summary of what you are about to watch.

  • 1hour exercise: 30min listening, 10min walk/dance, 30min listening, 10min break… repeat like that.
  • Do the material at least twice in one day.
  • There are three types of learning:
    1- Kinesthetic: Body moves.
    2- Audio.
    3- Visual.

For Intermediate/ Advanced Levels:
- Baby Steps Method(3I): immerse in input.
- Take how babies learn and incorporate it to make a system that will help you.

Step1:
- 90% comprehension of all listening materials.
- Prep yourself by reading a summary.
- Work on grammar and vocabulary.

Benefit:
- Fast progression
Drawback:
- Limited resources
- Can be boring

Step 2:
- 20–30 comprehension in listening materials.
- Care more about your interest in the material.
- Look for the general message, not grammar or vocabulary.
- Do active listening (take notes)
- Do activities and listen to material play material in the background.

Benefit:
- Lots of material
- Fun/ Interesting
Drawback:
- Harder/ Slower

  • Look for reductions:
    For example: I don’t know h’er/ h’im
  • Linking words:
    For example: Howzit going? (How’s it going?)
    Wa didja do? (What did you do?)

[Pause and imitate]: By vocalizing it and using your mouth, and forcing that- you’re actually teaching your brain to understand what you’re hearing.

[Background Listening]: In your own country or langue, your langue is always around you. It causes no stress and there are things you kind of pick up subconsciously. Because you are surrounded by it. When you’re stressed out, the brain doesn’t work as well. You’re just listening casually to English, it’ll open itself up more to absorbing it and being more comfortable in the presence of English, which is extremely powerful.
