Joe Duncan argued in, “The Future of AI No One’s Predicting,” that the Generative AI hype train might be driving to the “meh” station.

Meaning, Generative AI might not revolutionize human life like the inventions of fire, electricity, and the smartphone. Gen AI could follow the pattern of NFTs, cryptocurrency, the Metaverse, Facebook Home, Amazon’s Fire Phone, Google Glass, Google+, and Google Wave.

Like those innovations, Gen AI could become a cool technology without much practical use or, at best, a very limited digital assistant. We might even forget it’s there half of the time.

The Example of Past “Meh” Technologies

NFTs and cryptocurrency were supposed to fundamentally reshape buying, selling, and the financial system. Instead, they became novelty investment assets for bored millionaires who dream of living like medieval barons. Any future improvements or changes to blockchain technology cannot alter the technical foundations and, therefore, the feasible uses of NFTs or crypto.

Facebook’s Metaverse was going to pull everyone into virtual reality spaces. Companies spent billions — with a B — on digital real estate in the Metaverse. Does the Metaverse still exist? I…
