You don’t have to spend much time in education to hear someone call themselves a ‘visual learner’.

And as someone who regularly interviews new candidates for teacher education courses, I often hear people talking earnestly about how teachers should cater for every different type of learners.

But can leaners be categorised into types, or is it more a case of ‘everyone’s different’?

And do students really learn in different ways, anyway?

Some people certainly think that they do. In fact, there are multiple theories which claim to explain learning styles — ways of taking in information and skills that supposedly differ from one person to another.

Typically, these theories claim that a person’s learning style is relatively fixed, and that students should do tests to figure out their learning…
