No, this isn’t the title of the next Marvel Comics movie. Although, some sci-fi enthusiasts might already be familiar with the concept.

Mark Zuckerberg made headlines this week for his concept of ‘the metaverse’. He gave an exclusive interview to The Verge — which you can read or listen to here — in which he outlines his vision for the next step internet experience.

Welcome to the metaverse

In theory, the metaverse is neither a solely virtual nor physical interface.

Consider how much time you spent last year in the digital world, on Zoom calls, placing orders on Amazon, replying to emails, scrolling through Twitter. Where were you? On your couch? In the kitchen? Technically, yes. However, you were projecting your identity onto different platforms, portraying yourself in a tiny tile in a Zoom call, a witty remark on Twitter, a funny filter on Instagram.

You were also using the same log-in credentials to access multiple sites or to sign in or sign up for different services. Your Google, Facebook or Apple ID are tethered to many domains, spreading your identity over multiple media. This, in theory, is one aspect of the multiverse.
