I remember, at the very beginning of my marital separation, going to a favorite local restaurant by myself and sitting in the parking lot, unable to get out of the car. The kids were with their dad. I had a whole 48 hrs by myself. I could do whatever I chose. The possibilities were staggering.

It was dark and the leaves were just starting to come off the trees in serious numbers. People were bundled up, having only recently busted out their hats and scarves after the long, lingering summer. I watched them go past my car, in pairs or small groups, past the tall white candles in hurricane vases by the restaurant’s front door, then slipping inside, one after another, where the warmth and noise and promise of a lovely evening whisked them off, out of my sight.

It was one of those picture perfect upstate New York evenings. I thought of old Sunday school songs about animals marching ‘two by twoosie-whoosie’ into the Ark. A world meant for two — but I was only one.

I had fought so courageously, so passionately, on the behalf of my soul, to be one again. To take the first, treacherous step out of my marriage by insisting on a separation. It was, to this day, the scariest conversation I’ve ever initiated. It was more than a conversation. It was a confession: I’m not so different than my mother after all, despite the promise I’d made to…
