A conversation between Pavel Cenkl & Daniel Wahl about education for the ReGeneration
On May 28th I recorded this conversation with the new director of Schumacher College and Head of Dartington Learning, Pavel Cenkl.
I have a deep gratitude for the influence that spending time at Schumacher College has had on my own life. I did a Masters in Holistic Science there between 2001 and 2002 and then stayed on as a volunteer facilitator and ‘helper’ into 2003. Since then I visited many times, facilitating courses there and also attending some programmes. Since 2016 I have been teaching regularly on the MA in Ecological Design Thinking.

Schumacher College has recently gone to some changes and also redesign some of the programmes in response to the pandemic.
In this conversation Pavel and I reflect on the college, its pedagogy and the amazing learning community context it generates. We also talk about the new courses and plans for the future, including the redesigned MA in Economics of Transition that will launch this September as an MA in Regenerative Economics. Pavel also spoke about the masters programme in the Poetics of Imagination that will be launched with Martin Shaw soon.
There are also plans to build on the long history that Dartington Hall Trust has with the arts and arts education and launch a new undergraduate programme at the estate.
00:36 … we explore ‘reinventing education from the ground up’ and what role Schumacher College could play in a global network of institutions coming together to create an alternative to conventional academic pathways, building an ecosystems of offers through many organisations that could turn into a new life-long-learning learning landscape of alternative pathways aimed at enabling people to build their capacity for the regeneration through engaging in regenerative practice.
00:39 Pavel speaks about his experience with Bioregional education networks in the Vermont (North Eastern US)
00:41 … education for bioregional regeneration …
00:47 … Pavel highlights that the masters starting in September have an application deadline coming up (but late applicants will still be considered)
00:49 … exploring the potential of Dartington estate … and some new partnerships with Ecosystems Restoration Camps (for occasional pop-up camps on the estate) and also linking Schumacher College with the Regenerative Communities Network …
