Parents “help” the school system

Students come to school in vans, not busses.

This school year has been weird but something jumped out at me just last week: As I was parking in the front lot, a white van pulled up behind me and various unrelated children poured out of it. The van sped off quickly.

What the heck was that? A lightbulb went off. Somebody has figured out how to beat the system. I laughed to myself and went to tell a colleague.

Within minutes I told the other teacher what I saw. We both went, Hmmm… People out here trying to hustle. Well, it is all well and good unless a problem occurs, then what? Gotta admire the ingenuity. Above my paygrade so… moving on to do my assigned job.

I receive some confirmation. The next day as I parking, I see a different van. Black one this time. This van has a paper sign in the window that reads “Aguilar #1.” Well, damn. This is definitely a business. In fact, this person might be in competition with the van that I saw the day before, because today’s van operator was enterprising enough to copy the signage procedures that the regular yellow school busses use.

I cannot blame these entrepreneurs. They may or may not be parents themselves. I suspect that they are or have been at some time in order to observe the traditions and timing of the current…
