Reading List 2020: MA Ecological Design Thinking

Daniel Wahl, Schumacher College, 2020

There are certain rhythms and recurring patterns that mark the passing of the years for me. Teaching on the MA in Ecological Design Thinking at Schumacher College is one of them. I have been teaching on the course for the last 4 years and really enjoy this regular reconnection with my own alma mater. The 18 months I spent at Schumacher College between 2001 and 2003 doing the Masters in Holistic Science and working as a volunteer and facilitator there were among the most transformative and intense period of my life so far. The college and what I learned there and the connections to people I formed their have deeply influence my life’s path ever since.

Due to the pandemic, I taught the students online this year. Despite the fact that I would have enjoyed being with them in person to facilitate more dynamic and embodied processes and while I did miss the wonderful surrounding of Dartington Hall Trust, I also have to admit that somehow the ‘Schumacher Magic’ also happened online. What a wonderful group of students! It is a gift to be in conversation with them. The group is much bigger this year, almost twice the size. The question centric conversations we had on Tuesday and Thursday this week were so rich and engaging for me. I would have loved more time.

Last year I created this blog post after my time at the college with the students on the course. Sharing the reading list was much appreciated by folks around the world who were interested in the course but might not have the privilege of time and money to attend it. So I decided to also share this years reading suggestions further below.

I try to cover somewhat different ground every year. I am also shifting more and more to a conversational approach based on drawing out from the students what they want to talk and learn about rather than some pre-prepared agenda of what I want to share with them. We had a total of 6 hours together and as you can see below covered a lot of ground.

This is the list of topics and related readings I shared with them after the sessions based on what we talked about. Enjoy!
