Four Simple Suggestions on Making Your Medium Articles More Race-Friendly

You and I as Medium writers, White ones mostly, don’t have to be BLM or diversity professionals to be more inclusive in our writing.

While it would be both a kindness and a step in the right direction to include more POC in our posts as part of the discussion, you and I can do some pretty simple things to make our material more engaging as well as inclusive. Along the way we also learn some interesting lessons about what inclusiveness looks and feels like.

  1. Use POC photos in ALL your articles. It doesn’t take yeoman’s work to show POC doing everything you and I do. Whether it’s fitness or sports or cooking or beauty products, or weight loss or whatever, there is nothing you and I do as White folks that POC don’t also do. The simple-but-profound act of seeking and posting photos of POC doing what you’re writing about both normalizes their presence in that activity for you but also for your readers. Just as movies and TV shows have normalized much of the LGTBQ community, gay marriage and biracial marriages by showing them as normal humans in normal activities in our storytelling, so do we as Medium writers do the same thing for our readers.
