Progressives and the mainstream media have come out overwhelmingly against for-profit educational institutions. But is this bias justified?

While the hysteria against for-profit educational institutions seems to have subsided recently, there is still a lot of bias against for-profit educational institutions, especially for-profit colleges and universities. It was no secret that the Obama administration was openly hostile to these institutions. A Department of Education press release of 2014 called these institutions “… predatory, poor-performing career colleges (2014 Dept of Education press release),” and vowed to take swift action against them.

Some of their criticisms are entirely justified. There had been some notable failures of for-profit institutions. One of the most famous was the bankruptcy of Corinthian Colleges. The media skewered this for-profit higher education company for being a “GI Bill Profiteer” and accused them of “aggressive recruitment” and “poor teaching quality.” (as reported by America’s Media Watchdog, July 2014). This troubled for-profit company declared bankruptcy in 2014 and shuttered its doors forever.
