What can corporate politics do to you?

A few months ago, I had the privilege and the opportunity to work at a crypto firm — one of the biggest in the industry. I say privilege because this industry was offering more than double my previous salary, which was huge considering I’ve only graduated for about a year.

So, yes, I was happy and excited. I worked hard, actively offered to help others, and all the cliche “good employee” things.

Then come the end of the year, bonuses were given out. And surprise! I wasn’t eligible for that because I was a contractor.

You’re right. This was partly my fault for not clarifying matters like these during the negotiation. But as a young graduate, I didn’t know this was something to consider.

And for the company, my lack of questions became their profit.

Case in point, I found out I was one of the lowest paid in the entire company and was losing out on a few thousand dollars per month, plus benefits. It sucked. It made me feel betrayed and, frankly, dumb.

But corporates love it because, in any case, as soon as the employee starts believing they are worth less, the company gets to keep a few more bucks for themselves.
