Shanghai American School is a non-profit, independent school in Shanghai, China. Primarily serving international students and parents, Shanghai American School established a Problem Based Learning learning environment dedicated to integrating four subjects: English, Science, History and Art in Design. Named the Innovation Institute, Science and Art in Design collaborated to create an assignment that asked students to demonstrate how the application of chemistry has increased humanity’s access to resources. The results of the improved access to resources has had both positive and negative impacts.

Problem based learning typically provides students with a driving question to answer. In this assignment the question was stated as follows:

How does the application of chemistry impact the just distribution of wealth?

Students identified the most commonly used resources of humanity and then used Illustrator software to create infographics. The following infographic designs are meant to illustrate the source, sink, chemistry and impact involved in the utilization of these resources.
