Should we worry about food insecurity?

In January of this year, as the entire United States waited for the government shut down to end, an NPR station interviewed multiple people to get their takes on how it would affect the US economy. As I listened, I heard at least one person declare that the furloughed people would just have to wait to purchase a new couch instead of satisfying that urge immediately.
