The President’s Failure

At this point, it is no surprise. The President of the United States added fuel to the fire. He wants a civil war and keeps adding gas to what is a very volatile situation. He also has now given permission to the far right to use force. He has also given them permission to arm themselves. This is what he alluded when he said “your second amendment.”

This is a reference to one of the reasons for the Second Amendment. It was not just to have a force to defend the country in time of war. No, it was also a way for southern patrols to arm themselves, to suppress slave rebellions, and chase slaves. This subtext is not missed by white supremacists, who never have an issue with them being armed. But do have a cow when minorities do get weapons. This is why the National Rifle Association said no word when Philando Castille was killed by police. He was a black man, with a legally owned concealed weapon which he told the officer he had.

The NRA said nothing. Nor did many other fans of the second, because he was the wrong person to have a gun. This is why the same group had a problem with Collin Kaepernick taking a knee. The national anthem is not limited to the two stanzas we all know. It did celebrate slavery as well. This, they know.

The president talks about dominating while being an ally to peaceful protestors. In a split-screen that will live in history books, peaceful protesters were attacked by police on Lafayette Park. Why? This is to prove that he could do it and to walk across to St John’s Church. It’s was not for prayer. It’s not to bend a knee before God. It was to serve his fundamentalist base, whose support is starting to wane during the pandemic.

The president continues to declare war on political norms because he will not allow anybody to call him “bunker boy” on Twitter. He, in his mind, looked weak during the weekend when the secret service took him to the bunker. This is why he is now talking about domination and is looking for ways to expand and consolidate his power.

At this point we should question if the president will even allow the elections, which he is busy undermining, to happen. He is following all the steps in the authoritarian playbook. And his base, his black shirts, or SA, got the message. There are reports of white supremacists in both Philadelphia and Santee California, of white supremacists taking to the streets, for example. They picked fights with Black Lives Matters demonstrators.

In what is now predicable, the president keeps blaming Antifa for the violence. This also has a historic echo. The actual Antifa took to the streets of Berlin in 1932 and went to war with Hitler’s Brown Shirts. There were running street battles in Berlin, which the police did little to control. This was one way that Adolph Hitler consolidated his power, since he offered to fix it, and he had some authority to do such. When the Brown Shirts got too hot for him, after he took over, he had them killed during the night of the long knives. President Donald Trump is following that book, and the White Supremacist groups he refuses to denounce are infiltrating marches and creating havoc. We saw at least one likely Bugaloo boi when we took to the field on Sunday. Remember what I wrote at the top about the second amendment.

Yes, some people are taking advantage of the conditions on the ground to loot. Some of the looting is out of rage and desperation. But some of it is coming from these same white people who are part of the far-right system. This is their chance, after decades of being under a system they despise. We heard two try to start this disorder in the middle of the day during a peaceful march. We also heard a young woman scream “white power, all lives matter.” So don’t tell me that the thugs, which is code for black youth, are the only ones.

This is the real tension in the streets and the president is adding fuel to that fire. The language of domination is about the far right. It is code to the far right. It is fuel to those fires.

We are at a tipping point and history will be written. But even the Attorney General used language that should worry all not too long ago. History will be written by the winners. Well, we are now at that tipping point. The arc of history is long, but at this point, we may be facing a very long night, before history corrects itself in its telling.
