Ensuing violence directed at a peaceful gathering of students has sparked intense scrutiny and debate within the university community and beyond. Gene Block, President of UCLA, issued a statement that while condemning the violence, also highlighted the “complex nature” of the situation. In many ways, this could be a situation that seems confusing on the surface to the untrained eye. Most crimes against humanity are intentionally complicated by people in positions of power to confuse, disorient, and divide the populous that elected them to power.

Witnesses and victims of the attack provided harrowing details of the events that unfolded.

Reports indicated that the attackers, described as mostly male and some older than the students, were armed with planks of wood, pepper spray, and other makeshift weapons. Some were seen carrying Israeli flags and pro-Israel symbols, which further fueled tensions in what was already a highly charged atmosphere.
