The Benefits of Journaling Before Meditating
And why, when combined, they are the only tools you need for self-discovery.
Like any skill, journaling involves a bit of a learning curve. Yet it’s common to hear someone say it isn’t for them well before picking up the pen. Or to hear the excuse that someone can’t write, or simply doesn’t have the time, or already knows themselves well enough so doesn’t see any need in doing it.
You wouldn’t expect to be able to express yourself through paint and create a masterpiece as soon as you pick up the brush. You’d expect a colorful disaster. So why would you expect to be able to produce articulate, flowing, coherent prose after just five minutes of journaling?
Journaling takes time to get used to and time to work its magic.
But don’t get me wrong. This isn’t because you need to relearn all the grammar from high school and get over the achy wrist of writing on paper and come to a point where you can actually read your own handwriting again.
Despite it being the reason many people avoid it, journaling has nothing to do with how well you can write.
Journaling is about the endless process of relating to and knowing yourself.
