The other day, I opened Instagram and my profile struggled to refresh. It was just a blank page.

For a moment, all the tiny, self-reinforcing squares, all of the years of posts, the thousands of words and images and thoughts were gone. I felt a little pang of panic. But also, right on the heels of that sensation, I felt strangely relieved. I felt free.

Have you ever heard of the story of the person who passed by two men laboring in the sun? They were lifting heavy stones and laying them on top of one another with cement. The person passing by asked: what are you guys doing? The first man said: we’re stacking these heavy stones and it’s back breaking word and it’s really awful! And the other man said: we’re building a cathedral.

I’m very clear, when it comes to my life and my work in this world, that I’m building a cathedral. Even though some of the stones are heavy and hard to lift, there is deep purpose in the lifting and assembling of them.

But even cathedrals are impermanent. And rather than see that as depressing or use it as justification to say: why bother? — this understanding of impermanence can become a gateway to more profound living.

Nothing lasts so savor it. Be prepared to let it go. Everyday Life gives us smaller letting go opportunities to practice for the BIG one.
