As white studies emerges as a discipline, it is becoming increasingly important for ethical white folks to educate themselves about their whiteness and its impact on BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color). The delusion of white supremacy infects us all. We need the good white folks to arm themselves against the colonial default of racism and oppression by intentionally opting into their own Antiracist education.

Lesson 1: No one can do the work for you.

It’s no one else’s job to explain your racism to you. If you are one of the decent people (or aspiring) it’s time to wake up from the racist coma you didn’t ask to be put into and conscript yourself into the revolution. See you on the front lines. Your next step to signing up is to keep reading.

Lesson 2: The work is not optional.

I know it’s tempting to look away, run away, and otherwise distract yourself from the responsibility of understanding your own whiteness. It’s uncomfortable. I get it. But we are now into the 2020s and irresponsible wearing of whiteness is possibly, for the first time in history, a substantial liability. Ignorance is a legitimate risk.
