A Hard Pill to Swallow

I wish I’d spit it out

“I made a mistake.”

Her expression let me know that my response was everything except what she was looking for.

“A mistake?! That was more than a mistake.”

I searched her face for signs of sarcasm and let my gaze settle on her guileless eyes. Not a trace. She was serious, and I didn’t know what to make of it.
