I Was Crushed When People Whom I Thought Would Have My Back Didn’t

Feeling abandoned by your partner during adversity is the most isolating feeling in the world

For as long as I remember, the men in my life never stood up for me — it was always the women.

Not that I need anyone to anymore — but I certainly did when I was younger. And also while I was married.

Is it wrong to expect your significant other to stand up for you in a difficult situation?

Under normal circumstances, it is quite natural to expect the parents to lend a guiding hand and take action when something appears amiss for a child who may not yet have a clear understanding of right and wrong.

My father took a more lenient approach while my mom took it to the other extreme.

As a child, I had no choice but to comply with their decisions, even though I wouldn’t say I liked both approaches.

One particular incident that stands out in my child is that I matured fast — I was a 12-year-old child in a young woman’s body. Perhaps that could be a reason why I drew leering glances and inappropriate propositions from men much older than me. I mean I could understand interest from boys but guys my dad’s age?
