I was trying to find the perfect avocado when an older woman in the grocery store complimented my height.

“I always wanted to be tall like you,” she said.

This happens a lot as a tall person. Sometimes older women are stopping you in the grocery store with compliments, and other times they are asking if you’ll grab something off the top shelf for them.

You get asked a lot if you played sports when you were younger, predominantly by men.

People want to know, “How tall are you, actually?” And, are your parents tall, too?”

Clothes don’t always fit as they should, airplane rides suck, and the number of times you hit your head in your life will be equivalent to the number of times a short person stands on their tiptoes to reach something.

You see, there are many benefits to come from being tall, but at several points in my life, it’s felt as if my height is the heaviest burden I carry.

Growing up, I especially struggled to accept the long torso, limbs, and legs given to me. Boys weren’t attracted to the tall girl, and I stuck out like a sore thumb at every school dance. My coordination was off the charts…
