I was stunned when my friend Jessica told me she was getting a divorce.

Old Friends Getting Together

Since we no longer live nearby, we meet for a face-to-face Christmas catchup each year, taking turns traveling. Some years, December is our only face-to-face meeting, but we talk once a month.

In other years, we have gotten together many times. It depends on what is happening in our lives. Jessica is one of my friends with whom I click immediately, no matter how long it is between our conversations.

I knew it was serious when she insisted we go out for lunch without my spouse. I was not surprised when her husband did not come on the trip. Her spouse often had something else going during her turns to come to my home — my spouse, on the other hand, typically tags along on our adventures.

I met Jessica in 1983 at my first corporate job post-college. We became fast friends as the only female engineers in the department. I attended her wedding. I thought they were happy or at least satisfied. I was wrong.
