Reacting to the OJ Verdict with the Fed-Ex Guy Schooled Me About the Gulf Between Us

Well before the Black Lives Matter movement, my eyes were opened by an emotional exchange in the minutes after the outcome of the Simpson trial

Who is this guy?

Almost everything that happened thirty years ago is blurred and hazy. But not the OJ Simpson trial. I knew next to nothing about OJ, the athlete. So, when half of the guests at my cousin’s wedding were clustered and glued to the bar, I was totally confused. How rude was it that they were watching a stupid basketball game at a wedding reception?

But then it was worse. They were watching some white car slowly lead a parade of police cars. Who cared?

Well, people cared plenty. The murders he was accused of committing galvanized the country. There wasn’t the tiniest detail of the trial that wasn’t compelling to someone.

As a country, we were united in an investment in the event. But there were strong undercurrents of emotional dissent about the heroes and villains in the case.

More than a crime, more than a trial
