“Ya know it’s hard out here for a” writer. We pour ourselves out vulnerably or painstakingly research or write four drafts of a $.32 earner. When we’re chosen for further distribution, we are buoyed to publish for one more day. When a fellow writer or reader leaves an encouraging note, we feel we can make a difference — even if we can’t pay the bills.

Writers here come from a plethora of countries, sentiments, writing talent level, and areas of expertise. While some of us earn a decent living from our published writing elsewhere, not many can “quit their day job” to live off of profits from our articles, stories, and posts.

But we remain.

Why?

For those of us who bleed the need to weave a story, we are excited to share and hone our craft. For those tepidly dipping a toe into this huge and icy lake, practice helps — and seeing your thoughts published is exhilarating. The former describes me, but there are so many other reasons I stay. I’ve stumbled across beautiful, soul-feeding, life-giving work. I’ve had my perspective grown or challenged. But most importantly, I’ve met fellow creatives who have become, on some level, friends.
