The Bugs Bunny Show Made Us Feel Like Dancing — And We Did!

Saturday morning cartoons! In my generation, we were given just one day a week to celebrate animated wonder. But with the right refreshments, we made the most of our communal television time.

My little brother Matt and I would sneak downstairs. Parents deserved to sleep late on Saturday mornings, so we were careful not to have the TV at movie theater decibels.

My favorite was The Bugs Bunny Show. And, looking back, it seems I wasn’t alone. Wikipedia says that the show ran for 27 seasons. A total of 684 shows. Because the show offered Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons, I was sure to keep my brother’s kindergarten-level attention.

But that wasn’t my favorite part. The show would begin with “This is It,” an anthem written by Mack David and Jerry Livingston. Bugs and Daffy Duck sing together to go “on with the show.”

Then, marching out in formation comes the entire Looney Tunes cast. Tweety, Speedy Gonzales, Hippity Hopper, Yosemite Sam, Sylvester the Cat, then Elmer Fudd. (He wore a suit, tie, and straw hat — not his usual hunting clothes.)

Pepe LePew, Wile E. Coyote, and Foghorn Leghorn rounded out the chorus line.
