The UK Can Fix Homelessness?
Yes it can, but I warn you, it will be easy
I’m homeless.
Technically.
My partner and I found ourselves without a place to live around the time of covid (2021) and we ended up flapping our way over to the volunteer circuit in the UK. We travelled around, volunteering for causes we believed in, in exchange for food and accommodation.
We care a lot about the wellbeing of humanity so even when we had nowhere to live, we didn’t believe that ought to stop us from caring.
We volunteered at a community outreach delivering arts and crafts for disadvantaged kids in Somerset. We helped an educational charity on a working farm. We also tried to help raise goats for therapy, but that’s a whole other story for another time.
Skipping ahead a few years…
Now, we housesit full-time for accommodation, and with a remote job between us, we’re actually doing quite well. We even bought a lovely half-converted van last January from a friend we met while volunteering. The safety of always having a bed and a place to sleep is remarkably simple, but so profound when you know what it’s like to be unsure.
