Remembering Camp Salvation
July Writing Prompt for Agency Magazine
If you’re not already a writer with us, please read the Submission Guide below.
Sandy walked through the high grass. Upon finding the chain link fence, she followed the thorns and pink and white honeysuckle lengths. The breeze gently blowing under the wooded cover was faint. Though it brought no small comforts, each spotlight of sunshine that broke through the canvas was welcome. The humidity was sopping and thickening the air. Sandy’s skin stuck to her clothing. With every ten steps she took, Sandy fought a spider’s web across the path or a mosquito or fly behind her glasses. She arrived at the gate to the lost graveyard, unlocked the padlock, and let herself in.
Three graves lay in the yard. One grave, adorned with little more than a moldy stone, was cracked and crumbled on the ground. Another was marked with a wooden cross. The one Sandy approached was sunken earth.
She dropped to her knees on the hard dirt and clawed into the grass and weeds, gnashing her teeth. Hitting the ground with the side of her hand twice, she grunted a furious curse. “Finally. Finally, it’s over, Mom.”
Holding back tears, she rolled her eyes to the broken stonework, noting the words written across the top half. She wiped the dust and found the words loving pastor, father, and husband.
“It’s finally come to me, Dad. The camp, the church, the land. All of it. I can’t decide what I should do. Should I burn it all down like you did?” Sandy asked, standing to her feet. “No, you didn’t burn it down, did you? You just stoked the fires that he lit,” she said, pointing at the cross. “You inspired things. You let things happen. You turned your back, or worse, you watched as things happened. Camp Salvation? More like Camp Hell.”
Sandy kicked the wooden cross over her uncle’s grave. She noted it wasn’t the first planted, recognizing other broken sticks near it. She could only imagine her mother replanting one when she visited or having one of the men she hired to come and take care of the place. Sandy had stopped all payments to the hired hands and guards over the camp when the family’s lawyer read the last will aloud.
“The question is, Dad, should I bring it back? Should I redeem the family name? Allow the campers to come back. We think we got rid of the problem.” She smirked, looking at the cross. “We haven’t seen or heard from him in a long time.”
Sandy looked into the trees out across the pine trees in the direction of the camp, where she remembered running away to escape. She remembered the good times, too. Finding love for the first time. There were a few firsts. But did the good memories of Camp Salvation outweigh the bad ones?
