We are all aware that reading is a fundamental skill that, not only stimulates children’s intellectual development, but also opens up a whole new realm of possibilities by encouraging comprehension of previously unthought of realities and ideas, enhancing one’s imagination and creativity, and teaching you about grammar structures and communication. The benefits are vast and evident.

However, getting your child to enjoy reading can be a challenge. This is a list of ten classic children’s books that have engaged so many young minds, taking them on journeys and adventures they will always treasure fondly.

A Bear Called Paddington — Michael Bond

This book was originally published in 1958 and is still a dearly beloved book by thousands. The tale chronicles the adventures of one of the most adorable characters: Paddington the Bear, who travels from Peru and meets the Brown family at Paddington Station. Since that day, ordinary life becomes extraordinary. Charm and humour are the main ingredients in this classic book that is sure to bring joy to any child.

Charlie and the chocolate factory — Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl has long been synonymous with wild imaginings and enduring tales for children. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is only one of many stories he penned, but it’s probably the most well-known and best-loved. When a mysterious and whimsical Willy Wonka invites a lucky few to enter his factory that has been shrouded in secrecy for years, Charlie (and the rest of the world) is after his Golden Ticket! The lion, the witch and the wardrobe — C.S. Lewis

This classic American novel is the second in the fantasy series: The Chronicles of Narnia and has long appeared on must-read lists by readers of all ages. It is a stand-alone book, but one may easily find themselves wanting to delve deeper into the Narnian universe. Follow the adventures of four brave siblings as they walk through the wardrobe and into the eternally frozen land that is Narnia. Encounter the characters of this intricately detailed world and feel yourself becoming attached and invested in this fantasy world.

Winnie-the-pooh — A. A. Milne

It would be negligent to leave out this 90-year-old classic from the list. The characters in this well-known story are iconic and timeless, sweet and silly, funny and witty all at the same time. It’s no wonder that children are drawn to them so delightfully.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone — J.K Rowling

Here is a contemporary narrative that captured the minds of millions and is now a modern-day classic worthy of being passed down to the next generation. In this book, the first installment of seven, we meet a young Harry Potter, who is introduced to a world he didn’t know existed, but to which he definitely belongs. Introduce your child to the fantastic universe of witchcraft and wizardry and follow Harry as he makes a few great friends and a couple of enemies along the way.

Famous Five: Five on a Treasure Island — Enid Blyton

As the first of a highly successful series, this classic introduces us to a group of youngsters and their dog who embark on an adventure to find long lost treasure. The Famous Five contains mystery, a couple of bad guys, and a strong appetite for adventure. We would expect nothing less from this legendary author.

The story of Tracy Beaker — Jacqueline Wilson

This tale of a young and troubled Tracy Beaker is one that would make you laugh and cry, as well as teach any young reader how to empathise with others and grow on an emotional level. Wilson tells the story of a child with “behavioural problems” as seen through the eyes of the child herself, who feels unloved and alone. This book is one that will touch anyone’s heart in an honest and simple way.

Skulduggery Pleasant — Derek Landy

This witty and imaginative story of twelve-year-old Stephanie Edgley takes us into a world where horror is reality and the good guys really raise the bar for the bad guys. Readers of this book rave about for years after discovering it. It’s a page-turner that will get any child hooked!

Wonder — R.J. Palacio

Wonder is a fascinating narrative written from the perspectives of several different characters as we are introduced to young August Pullman, a boy with a facial difference who wants nothing more than to be ordinary. Let yourself become enthralled by this community’s struggle for acceptance and empathy.

Charlotte’s Web — E. B. White

This children’s novel is beautifully written and enjoyed by both adults and children. The author’s use of sentence structure exemplifies use of rhythm in prose to allow readers easier visualisation of a scene. The story delicately addresses themes of change, death and innocence in an endearing and unforgettable way.
