Ever since so-called “social determinants of health” were accepted by the mainstream medical community as impactful on outcomes there’s been an explosion of startups looking to capitalize. The first and most obvious explosion has been around helping get people to & from their medical appointments. After all, if you can’t find a way to get to your doctor it’s unlikely that you’re going to get better. Usurv, one of the players in this mix, just raised a $5mm Series A to accelerate it’s nationwide expansion. The financing was led by Henry Engelhardt, the former CEO of auto insurance giant Admiral Group.

The problem with this space is the lack of barriers to entry and inability to differentiate, as shown by its numerous competitors: Circulation, SendaRide, RoundTrip, and GoGoGrandparent to name a few. With the ease of building on top of existing ridesharing networks — Usurv itself is built on top of Uber & Lyft — it doesn’t take much to start a company in this space. While challenging for these companies, it’s great for consumers — expect rock-bottom prices and slim margins in the future.
