Over 5 years ago, I wrote about My Ideal Agile Delivery Report and outlined six key questions that every product team should be able to answer.

My perspective hasn’t changed, and I still believe these six key questions build the foundations for any good delivery report. I think of them like a military Situation Report or SITREP, as they are also known.

Being able to answer these questions provide an immediate view of the challenges facing a team and helps understand how they are performing and what opportunities there might be to help speed them up.

  1. What will you deliver, and by when?
  2. What are the biggest opportunities for improving the flow of work?
  3. How is the team feeling? Is the environment conducive to effective delivery?
  4. What are the biggest risks, and what are the strategies we are following to address them?
  5. What will be the total cost of delivery?
  6. How healthy is the current product?

Having delivery leaders share these “SITREPs” with each other has the added benefit of providing an opportunity to learn from each other and is a key way of rapidly skilling up and developing future delivery leads.
