The results of the 10th annual Developer Survey conducted by Stack Overflow are in! Which is the most loved language amongst coders, and which is the most dreaded? Stop guessing and continue reading!

In an attempt to make its survey more representative of the diversity of programmers worldwide, Stack Overflow reached out and collected the opinions of nearly 65,000 developers. The survey covers a broad spectrum of topics under 4 main categories: Developer Profile, Technology, Work and Community.

One thing to keep in mind is that the survey was conducted in February before the COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic. Nevertheless, the results are still very interesting!

Here’s a sneak peek from this year’s survey:

  • Τhe most beloved language: Rust
  • The most commonly used programming language: JavaScript
  • The most dreaded programming language: VBA
  • Top 3 web frameworks: jQuery, React.js and Angular
  • Developers’ primary operating system: Microsoft
  • On developer type: The most common combinations include back-end, front-end, and full-stack developer.

Also, 75% of respondents noted that they learn a new technology at least every few months or once a year. This highlights the fact that learning is paramount to any succeeding developers. As innovations happen quickly, we have to keep up. Another interesting fact is that more than 75% of developers said they work overtime at least occasionally. As developers shift to working from home, they sometimes find it hard to set boundaries and maintain a healthy work-life balance. In our QuaranTeam Playbook, we share useful tips on how to create rituals, connect and spend quality time with your peers and loved ones.
