Technology never ceases to amaze us. Every day, somewhere in the world, a scientist does something that may change how we perceive our environment. Every day, a technology company announces a new feature or application that could probably make our lives easier. The thing is that with so many changes in such a small-time frame, it is really hard to keep track. But that’s what we’re here for.

Each month we research and share the hottest technology and science news, in headlines. Let’s see what May 2024 had to offer.

Pilot study shows that AI could actually change EV charging

Exciting new AI tools are on the horizon, and they could be a game-changer for how we manage the power grid and electric vehicle (EV) charging! A small but promising study by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) and the startup Utilidata is showing some intriguing results.

These researchers are diving into the world of EV charging behavior with the help of AI, and their goal is to make the whole experience smoother for drivers and better for utilities as they brace for an increase in electricity demand. What they’ve discovered so far is pretty interesting: EV charging doesn’t always draw power consistently, which can mess with power quality and potentially wear out charging equipment faster.

The ability to instantly spot and even predict these issues with AI could be a total game changer.

New YouTube games are out now and not just for Premium

YouTube is the latest to join the growing list of companies with gaming initiatives, and they’re rolling out an exciting new program called Playables for both mobile and desktop. To dive in, just head to YouTube’s website or open the Android/iOS app and look for Playables in the sidebar.

YouTube makes it easy for players by saving their progress and keeping track of high scores. With over 75 games to choose from, including classics like chess and fun crossword puzzles, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Elon Musk will finally testify in the SEC’s investigation of Twitter

Elon Musk is back in the news with the SEC, and things are heating up! The SEC sued him after he initially refused to testify about the delay in disclosing his substantial Twitter share. But now, Musk has agreed to cooperate.

According to a legal document filed on Thursday, Musk has waived his right to appeal a court order, meaning he’ll be sitting down for an up to five-hour interview at one of the SEC’s offices. While the exact date remains under wraps “for confidentiality purposes,” it’s confirmed that Musk and the SEC have already agreed on it.

Google answers on some peculiar AI results

Last week, Google launched its AI search results for millions to try out, aiming to enhance the search experience. However, things got a bit out of hand. Instead of useful information, the AI dished out bizarre advice, like suggesting people put glue on their pizza to help the cheese stick.

In a company blog post published on Thursday, Google’s head of search, Liz Reid, explained that “data voids” and quirky user queries were to blame for the inaccuracies. Despite the hiccup, Reid emphasized that AI results are actually leading to “higher satisfaction” with Search. She clarified that AI Overviews typically don’t “hallucinate”; they just occasionally misinterpret what’s already out there on the web.

We had such a busy month tech-wise. And that’s why we love technology. Because every minute can bring a major breakthrough, every hour can bring something awesome into this world. How do you feel about science and technology? Would you like to work for a company where software development and technology are the words of the day every day?
