Should you have a phone call, video call or meet face-to-face?
One of the 12 principles in the agile manifesto states:
The most efficient and effective method of conveying information to and within a development team is face-to-face conversation.
However given the distributed nature of the world we live in, is it always possible or practical to form co-located development teams? It is not only about economics but also the search for talent which is often distributed geographically.
Without denying the fact that face-to-face conversation beats all other modes in effectiveness, with technology advantage that we have these days, we have alternatives.
This quote from Naval Ravikant really provides the most concise and simple answer I have found to that question.
Emotional context really defines the level of engagement that is needed in a discussion. A code review might very well happen on a phone call or maybe a video call, however a discussion regarding promotion is best done face-to-face as the emotional content is the conversation is way too high !!
