After hours of searching, days of reading, and weeks of digesting, I have identified thirteen global trends impacting the world of work in 2017 and beyond. This is part 6 in a series of 13 articles.

HR must become a leader in the digital organization.

With companies and people increasingly relying on technologies, HR is not only challenged with the task of digitizing their HR platforms, but also with developing digital workplaces for employees. Only a few companies in the world consider themselves to be a digital organization at this time. We can expect a lot more work in this area.

The newest generation of workers expects to be able to use and share information electronically, in a transparent way. They want an integrated, digital experience at work, heavily relying on mobile apps, online video, and social networks. And if they don’t get it, they will leave. At least half of employees consider leaving their organizations within a few years if their employers don’t accelerate their digitization of the workplace.

The newest generation of workers expects to be able to use and share information electronically, in a transparent way.

In the last few years, we have seen the launch of feedback tools, chatbots, AI help services, automated recruitment processes, and many other new technologies for talent management. These innovations may culminate in an all-out war among emerging HR platforms. But standardization, with one technology vendor offering all HR services across the same company, most likely remains an illusion.

More and more organizations around the world put HR in a position to lead the entire digital transformation. New technologies must be deployed that change and influence the way people work with each other, and relate to each other, as a networked, digital workforce. This must be supported with a digital workplace that fosters productivity and innovation, and with modern communication tools and devices. All of this should be driven by HR professionals who themselves must learn to operate in a fully digital way.

The Agility Scales team is trying to put the digital transformation of the company into the hands of workers, supported by HR. If you want to know more, join our community.
