Design is Today
In deciding on what to write for our first medium article, I went through a lot of templates and other articles. I then decided to write about the technology rush today, probably because I work with software firm. In the middle of my search for (novelty) in writing, I came across an interesting article on the BBC website and diverted from my intended topic, but not totally.
The article began with a preamble which said, “design touches life from the computer interface to the packaging of goods in our shopping basket”. Wow, this summarizes all that I was trying to relay in my initial topic. What better way to put it, Design is what the world is about today. World changers and entrepreneurs design, whatever technology you come across is a design, in going about daily activities, you might design in one situation or the other to get through (it could be in choosing the best route — that’s designing). Design brings change to individuals or a group of people.
A practical situation was given in the content of the same article, Eva Valicsek, redesigned an age-long egg packaging. I don’t think I ever heard about anyone complaining about the current egg packages (probably everyone thought they were the best they could ever be), yet Eva found a way to make it better (more durable, adaptable and handy — find the full article here http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20130319-updating-the-humble-eggbox-design).
Just like Eva, Akokotakra, a record keeping and data analyzing software from Agro Innova incorporates the daily activities of every poultry farmer into the software cutting the time each of these activities takes in half.
Each person is a designer in their own way and every design changes lives, yet what makes a great designer is the number of lives you manage to change (make better) with your design. Design for greater impact and all you have to do is just begin it.
“What You Can Do, or Dream You Can, Begin It; Boldness Has Genius, Power, and Magic in It”
~Johann Goethe
