New Horizons in The Autumn of Your Life by Xiangkun ZHU

In 2023, my mom finished high school in America at a young age of 72. In 2024, she is in her first year of college in Texas. In between, I am filled with unexpected stories.

There is abundance of joy in documenting her journey through my eyes.

Story 1: At Houston DMV (driving License) office

It was a usual summer day in Houston — under the blazing sun, it’s a hot and sultry day outside while chill and cold inside the cocoon of a well air-conditioned public building.

The setting of this story is a Houston DMV office. For the uninitiated, it is the office where you go to get your state identification card or driving license. Once upon a time, long lines would be the norm. Now, they have a token system. Like any other public service office, it was buzzing with activity. With that much of a throughput of people, life gets mechanical for all the agents behind the counter.

When Mom and I approached the counter, the reaction was no different. I said, “My mom would like to get her ID and here are the documents.” With those words, I pushed…
