I have a yellow notebook. I collect sentences that are better versions of how to say it. This list is what really worked for me with my whys.
I am sorry that you are sorry. Better than sorry.
Do you have a propensity to use the word sorry. Here are some better alternatives.
- Instead of: “Sorry to stop you mid-sentence.”
Say: “Can I chime in here?”
Why is it better? This alternative shows initiative while still asking for permission. Sorry is a defensive strategy.
2. Instead of: “Sorry, I got delayed.”
Say: “Thank you for your patience, my earlier meeting ran over.”
Why is it better (according to me)? Instead of making it about your delay, you make it about the other person waiting for you. That’s a power move.
3. Instead of: “Sorry, I missed that before.”
Say this: “Good catch! Thanks for opening my eyes to the error. Fixed it!”
Why is it better? Fixed it, tell us them you have acted on their suggestion. There is no better compliment to a person you spotted your error. Good catch is the same in…
