Note: This story contains short excerpts written by ChatGPT and DeepSeek AI for comparative purpose. They are clearly marked.

I don’t know if you’ve heard of DeepSeek but it’s another large language model (LLM) that works a lot like ChatGPT.

DeepSeek is from China but if TikTok is any indication, most Americans don’t care, because Statistica says 135.5 million Americans use TikTok.

The biggest shock is that DeepSeek said their LLM only cost 5.5 million to create, compared to the outrageous 100 million it cost to build GPT-4.

It launched in January and shot to the top of the app download charts. Only took five days for DeepSeek AI to pass a million downloads. People in the news are saying it’s a wake-up call to OpenAI and the tech sector.

Of course, I had to go look.

Got to the site and their logo is a giant whale like the one swallowed Jonah. Wondered if that big blue whale is going to swallow ChatGPT, become the TikTok of large language models.
