Leena Nair
(Chief HR Officer, Unilever)

How Unilever uses AI to recruit & train thousands of employees

Dealing with over 1.8 million applications and hiring over 30,000 employees each year, Unilever has been a leader in using AI to improve their recruitment processes. From an interview with Leena Nair, CHRO at Unilever, Bernard Marr explores the technology and how it is used to ensure that no talent is overlooked at the company.

Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic
(Chief Talent Scientist, Man Power Group)

As AI makes more decisions, the nature of leadership will change

This article examines the question of whether leadership is different in an AI age? It discusses that as leaders’ hard skills will continue to be eclipsed by smart machines, their soft skills will become ever more important.

In addition, while timeless leadership traits like integrity and emotional intelligence will no doubt remain important, leaders in the AI age need to be humble about others’ contributions, adaptable to the challenges that get thrown into their paths, steadfast in their vision of the ultimate destination on this path, and constantly engaged with the changing world around them.

Nigel Guenole
(Researcher, Goldsmiths University of London)

How to develop a data-savvy HR department

In this excellent article on creating a data-driven HR function, Nigel Guenole and Sherri Feinzig discuss how to create an analytical culture in your organisation by nurturing the right mindset among your employees.

They explain that this should start with creating a culture of analytics in your HR department. In order for senior leaders to help HR develop a culture in which people think analytically, you need to understand the different levels of comfort with analytics in HR, and then you need to decide your approach to hiring and building expertise at each of those different levels.

Humu

Employee Engagement 3.0: Humu launches Nudge Engine

Josh Bersin evaluates the journey of employee engagement from annual surveys (1.0), to more frequent pulse surveys (2.0) to a new phase (3.0) focused on driving behaviour change by using feedback and data to give everyone tips to perform better, highlighting the progress that Humu is making in this latest phase.

It is interesting to watch the shift that we are seeing, powered by AI, to generate data and insights for everyone at work, not just management. We are also seeing a rise in the way that insights are delivered at the point that people need them to make decisions, and via multiple communication channels, instead of via static dashboards or reports.

Frida Polli
(CEO & Co-Founder, Pymetrics)

How AI will make our workplace fair with diversity tech stack

Frida Polli walks us through her proposed solution for the issue of gender and ethic bias in hiring — a “diversity tech stack for hiring”. She highlights the issue that if an algorithm is not tested for bias, we cannot assume that it is diversity friendly just because it circumvents human unconscious biases.

In fact, this bias may be even more dangerous since it is baked into the algorithm and yet masquerading as bias-free. So if both humans and algorithms are biased, what is the solution for diversity friendly hiring processes? Polli proposes using varying technologies that focus on removing bias from their algorithms, including platforms such as Textio, Humanyze, Glassbreakers, HackerRank, and Pymetrics.
