From the beginning of Midjourney, Character Consistency has been one of the most sought-after functions. We want to be able to create a character and reproduce that character in different poses, scenes, settings, and sometimes in different art styles.
Over two years ago, I published my most read and viewed article with 36K hits.
Things have moved on considerably since those days. V4 had no style or character referencing but you could reference the image of a character plus the image of a scene and it would make a superb — for the time — effort to merge the two.
In the images below, note the multiple fingers in the V4 attempt, but the likeness was pretty good even in those pioneering days.
