Data Scraping For AI Automation — Step-by-Step
No matter what kind of AI automation you’re creating, chances are the data you need to make it useful and reliable isn’t found inside your company.
And that’s when data scraping becomes important.
Sadly, not many people include this important step in their AI automation workflows.
So in this post I’ll explain the process of data scraping for AI in a simple, step-by-step way.
You see, there’s no single right way to do data scraping.
And as you read on, you’ll realize that data scraping is a highly creative process.
Most breakthroughs in this regard come from creative thinking and finding new ways to look at the same data.
When you use the same data source as everyone else, you won’t gain a competitive edge.
This is especially true if you are building automations for things that are competitive in nature, such as cold outreach, recruiting or content creation.
So, be creative and think outside the box to differentiate yourself.
That’s why most of the steps here are phrased as questions to spark your curiosity and creativity, rather than just telling you what to do.
So, let’s get started.
- What do you want to achieve?
First, you need to define the purpose of your chatbot or AI automation. Ask yourself, what do you want to achieve?
- Do you want to create an AI tool for prospecting potential clients?
- Or do you want an AI that can answer questions as if it were you, like a digital clone?
- Maybe you need AI for customer service?
- What exactly is your goal?
This first question helps you understand the purpose of your project and will guide you through the next steps.
Even though it might seem obvious, don’t skip this step, as it will influence everything you do next.
2. What do you need to know?
Now this is where your creativity is crucial.
Think about the information you need to achieve the goal you defined in the previous step.
Your needs will vary greatly depending on your use case, industry, and company.
Remember, there are no one-size-fits-all answers in data scraping; it depends greatly on what you’re trying to achieve.
Say, if you’re building an AI Automation for cold outreach and prospecting, the obvious questions would be:
- Is this person in your industry?
- Is this person the decision maker?
- Does this person have the budget to buy my product?
It’s okay to start with broad questions, but as you refine your bot later, you should aim for more specific and relevant questions over time.
3. Where To Find This Information?
Once you know what information you need, think about where to find it. Again, be creative and consider various sources like social media, company websites, news articles, and anything else you can think of.
Once again, it’s the untapped data sources that tend to give you the most ROI.
Aim to identify at least three potential data sources, brainstorm extensively if needed, and then begin with the most promising one.
As you progress, you’ll likely come up with innovative ideas that can lead to significant breakthroughs.
4. Scrape
Next, it’s time for you to finally scrape the data.
I won’t get into too much detail about the data scraping step because it’s quite technical.
It really depends on whether you have coding skills or if you’re going to use no-code tools.
5. Test and refine
The final step is to test the results.
Ask yourself: Are the results relevant? Could they be improved, or are they good and reliable as they are?
Data scraping is a highly iterative process tailored to your goals. So, always test your results and look for ways to improve your results over time.
