From data privacy to algorithmic bias and declining public trust, understanding the ethics of AI and technology has never been more urgent.

2019 is the year in which we must tackle the difficult questions of how to implementresponsible AI systems and address them head on to come up with practical solutions for humans to flourish.

P.S. Join the debate at CogX 2019 — sign up to the CognitionX Earlybird AI Ethics pass! The Ethics Pass is normally £595, but has a 35% reduction to £387 till midnight on Friday. Let’s move the conversation forward!

Ethics

Is Ethical AI Even Possible?
“…building ethical artificial intelligence is an enormously complex task. It gets even harder when stakeholders realize that ethics are in the eye of the beholder.”

A good read!

When algorithms think you want to die
We need to talk about recommendations.

We don’t talk about recommendation systems enough, perhaps because they are now so commonplace, or perhaps because most users still don’t really understand how they work…… researchers are beginning to open up more serious conversations about how recommendations work. In Algorithms of Oppression, Safiya Umoja Noble criticises Google for amplifying racial stereotypes in its search results. Twitter and Tear Gas author Zeynep Tufekci has highlighted YouTube’s tendency to amplify conspiracy theories and extremist content.

Accountability

UK oversight group publishes ethics framework for police use of facial recognition

Good to hear, and a sign of positive engagement with the challenges of these new technologies. As our ethics primer will show, not all authorities around the world have always been so sensible.

AI Safety

The controversial tech used to predict problems before they happen

At least 53 councils are using computer models to detect problems before they happen, according to new research by Cardiff University and Sky News, which shows the scale of the controversial technology in UK public services. So-called predictive algorithms are being used by councils for everything from traffic management to benefits sanctions.

Are Robots Competing for Your Job? Probably, But Don’t Count Yourself Out

A fun roundup of recent fears on automation, and a remainder that if and when automation occurs, it will reflect prevailing culture and ideology, just as it did in previous great waves of economic change.

Impact on Jobs

A governor’s policy playbook to address disruptions from automation and AI

John D Ratliff and Nathan Arnosti write about new research by their Brookings colleagues which suggested that while AI isn’t likely to eliminate millions of jobs overnight, as many as 25% of American workers (36M people) face “high” exposure to task disruption in the coming decades. That exposure is more concentrated in certain states, especially in the Heartland. More worryingly, companies are accelerating their efforts to automate in order to stay competitive.

Privacy

Facebook’s global lobbying against data privacy laws

Facebook has targeted politicians around the world — including the former UK chancellor, George Osborne — promising investments and incentives while seeking to pressure them into lobbying on Facebook’s behalf against data privacy legislation, an explosive new leak of internal Facebook documents has revealed.

What’s on the agenda for CogX 2019?

We’ve joined forces with the leading groups at the forefront of the debate, formulating and responding to the most important questions of our time:

Join us to gain a better understanding of:

  • How we build and maintain social trust in AI?
  • The tensions created between privacy and security
  • The critical need for diversity in AI
  • Honouring the imperatives of fairness and accuracy
  • Models of regulation across the globe
  • How responsibility by design equals competitive advantage
  • Practical steps for responsible AI systems

CogX 2019 is taking place in King’s Cross on 10th to 12th June 2019 where we will debate these fascinating topics.
