From bolstering immunity to rejuvenating your skin, this simple yet potent concoction may have a holistic impact on your body during the winter months.

Pooja Shah Bhave, consultant clinical dietician, and diabetes educator, in Mumbai, noted that though this drink is commonly thought of as healthy, “it does not make a huge difference in your health”.

“Freshly squeezed lemon in water immediately consumed is a great source of vitamin C. But if you heat the water, vitamin C is almost immediately lost,” she added.

Anaswara Lashmi PS, dietitian, dept. of clinical nutrition, Amrita Hospital, Kochi, elaborated on the advantages and disadvantages of this drink.

Advantages

Boosts immunity: Lemon’s high vitamin C content enhances the immune system, crucial for preventing winter illnesses.

Soothes throat: Honey’s antibacterial properties provide relief for sore throats, a common winter ailment.

Hydration: Proper hydration is maintained with the water in this concoction, essential during colder months.

Nutrient boost: Lemon offers antioxidants, while honey provides antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Digestive health: Lemon’s acidity stimulates digestive enzymes, and honey acts as a prebiotic, supporting gut health.

Metabolism support: Some studies suggest that lemon and honey may aid in metabolism, potentially supporting fat breakdown. Lemons contain polyphenols, which may positively impact lipid metabolism, while honey may contribute to a gradual release of glucose, supporting energy metabolism

Appetite regulation: The combination of lemon and honey may help regulate appetite, promoting a feeling of fullness and potentially aiding in weight management.

Disadvantages

Dental health: The acidity in lemons, if consumed excessively, can affect dental enamel; it’s advisable to rinse the mouth afterward.
Allergies: Individuals allergic to citrus fruits or honey should avoid this mixture.

Sugar content: Excessive honey consumption may contribute to calorie intake; diabetics should be cautious.
Acid reflux: Lemon’s acidity may worsen acid reflux symptoms in some individuals.

Cavities: The combination of honey’s sugars and lemon’s acidity may contribute to dental issues without proper oral care.

Gastrointestinal issues: Some may experience discomfort, bloating, or diarrhea, especially on an empty stomach.

Who should avoid drinking this?

Diabetic individuals should avoid honey, as it will similarly increase blood sugar levels as sugar, said Bhave. “Also heart patients, obese individuals, individuals with high triglycerides, Weight Watchers, and fitness freaks who are advised to avoid sugar or want to avoid sugar, should also avoid honey. They can take plain lemon water.”

Even cancer patients are advised to stop sugar or sugary foods as the tumor feeds on sugar and grows rapidly. So cancer patients should also avoid honey. Some people are allergic to citrus fruits as they develop coughs and colds. They should avoid lemon water.
