When I started out on Medium, I made a lot of mistakes that almost ruined my writing career.

I want to share the 5 biggest mistakes I made, in hopes of helping others avoid stumbling into the same pits.

If you want to be successful on Medium, keep reading.

In this post, I want to share the top seven mistakes I made on Medium that almost destroyed my writing career before it even began.

So if you want to emerge victorious on Medium, read on!

Using AI for Writing

At one point, I got lazy and began using AI tools to content.

I thought auto-generated remarks would help me swiftly engage with more content. But these robotic responses severely lacked depth and originality.

I’ve now gone back to crafting custom comments fueled by my unique personality and perspective.

I know genuineness and sincerity matter, so I make sure to carefully read each piece rather than slapping down AI platitudes.

The personal touch may take more time, but is far more powerful for forging authentic ties.

Asking and Beggine For Followers

When I began on Medium, I was desperate to gain followers...

Because I want numbers only….

In my quest to be popular, I begged everyone I met to follow me.

What I didn’t realize was that my desperate begging only annoyed people.

I’ve since learned that genuine power comes not from pleading, but from providing value to others.

Now, instead of begging for followers, I focus on understanding my audience, building connections, and creating content that hopefully intrigues and delights them.

Bit by bit, I’m attracting an organic following of people truly interested in what I have to say.

Using Useless Titles

Early on, I made the silly mistake of using “Title:” in all of my article titles.

I thought it looked official and authoritative.

It didn’t take me long to appreciate how silly this was. It not only looked unprofessional, but it also lost valuable title space that could have been used to include interesting keywords that would have caught people’s attention.

Now I make sure my titles immediately grab interest and succinctly convey what the article is about.

wait… just look at the title of this post…

It’s look courios to click and know..

No more wasting title real estate on pointless clutter! Here are three reasons I no longer use this in my headlines:

  1. It looks amateurish and turns people off.
  2. It eats up valuable characters when space is limited.
  3. It distracts from my message instead of spotlighting it.

Promoting Affiliate Offer Every time

When I realized I could make money through affiliate links, I went crazy plastering them everywhere.

I shoehorned them into articles even when they weren’t relevant.

My only goal was to push products and score commissions. But this aggressive salesmanship ended up damaging my reputation.

Now I’m much more judicious with affiliate links.

I only include them organically when they truly add value for readers. I focus first on creating compelling content instead of prioritizing financial gain.

This shift in mindset hasn’t only improved my integrity as a writer, but has also increased engagement from an audience that now trusts me.

Commenting and Self-Promotion

I’m ashamed to admit how often I touted my own brilliance in comments on other people’s articles.

I thought complimenting the writer while directing them to my profile for more awesomeness was networking savvy. Unfortunately, it mainly just irritated everyone.

Now I understand the power of authentic engagement free from self-interest. Instead of hijacking comment sections to peddle my wares, I strive for meaningful dialogue that respects the author and builds genuine rapport with fellow readers.

This not only demonstrates professionalism but forges mutual understanding — true connection leading to lasting success.

In Conclusion…

By telling others about my rocky path to success, I hope to help them avoid these dangerous mistakes and get there more easily.

We now have the power to think about and make the changes that will make our work really shine.

So in conclusion, may we all learn from my mistakes as we move forward with care, integrity and wisdom!
